Know The Causes of Upper Back Pain And Prevent The Symptoms

Symptoms of Upper Back Pain

In some cases, you may start to notice a pain when you cough, sneeze or breathe deeply. This is because the vertebral bodies are attached to the ribs. But the most common symptoms of this kind of problem include an ache in the upper area of the back, stiffness, muscle spasms, tightness, a headache or tenderness when you touch the area.

What Causes or Contributes to Upper Back Pain

The range of movement the higher part of the spinal region is limited because of the attachment of the spine to the ribs. However, certain movements can trigger pain in this area. They include:

  • Excessive bending
  • A poor muscle tone
  • Smoking
  • Twisting awkwardly
  • Whiplash or other injuries suffered by the neck
  • Overuse of this region through repetitive movement
  • Being overweight
  • Contact sports
  • Lifting of objects in an improper manner or carrying very heavy loads (including backpacks)

How to Prevent the Symptoms

Usually, upper back pain is not a major cause of concern. However, it can make your daily routine uncomfortable and it could also lead to a lot of inconvenience. If it has been caused because of an accident or some injury, it could also start to get progressively worse. If it goes past the stage of discomfort and keeps getting worse, you should seek medical attention. But if it’s just a dull ache then there are a few things you can do at home to prevent the discomfort from increasing and also get some relief.

  • Stretching Gently: If you are uncomfortable due to the ache, you can perform a few gentle stretches to try and loosen your muscles. Don’t try anything too drastic because it could cause further injury. Ask the chiropractor for gentle stretching exercises.
  • Ice and Heat: Application of ice (like ice cubes sealed in a plastic bag or a cold pack) could help to reduce the ache and the swelling. For about 2 days, apply the ice to the area that is hurting for about 20 minutes every couple of hours. After 3 days, you can also try applying a little steam or moist heat and stretching slightly to improve mobility.
  • Medication: You can get some over-the-counter medicine like ibuprofen or acetaminophen to feel better. The doctor may also prescribe painkillers or muscle relaxants. Physical therapy is also recommended on certain occasions to improve flexibility and mobility.
